Give your baby an identity

Another way to strengthen the in-utero connection between you and you baby is by “making him real.” The more your baby is an actual person to you, the closer you’ll become with each other. That’s why giving him a pre-birth nickname is helpful because it allows you talk about him in an affectionate, very personal way. (The nickname—for instance, Bump or Sweetpea—doesn’t have to have any connection with the name you eventually give him once he is born.) This device is even more powerful when you and your partner use the nickname when in conversation with each other.

Keeping a diary of your baby’s progress in the womb has a similar effect. Noting down key moments of each trimester, what is discussed at each prenatal visit, what the different tests reveal, and so on, harnesses your interest, attention, and enthusiasm. Years later, your baby will probably be delighted to read all those details about his development before he was born and he’ll bask in the knowledge that you cared enough about him even then to keep a record of all that information.
